To comprehend what’s before our eyes.
First, to understand, then generalise.
Until our subject is but a special case:
a single point within some foreign space.
A space we measure, and manipulate
‘till it, or we, at last capitulate.
To see there writ, in calm, unweathered form
the fearful chaos of a thunderstorm.
And though, perhaps, obscurity may await us,
these are the things that motivate us.

I hope one day to find a little pearl,
in some modest work to play a part,
in understanding one corner of the world
That brings joy to a mathematician’s heart.
