The migratory birds, they flew,
The polyphagic rat withdrew,
The sky took on a darker hue,
When first I heard her cry.

Beyond the childish games of chance,
Beyond the poet's fluid dance,
A silken nightmare broke my trance,
When first I heard her cry.

And though my heart was far from pure,
My twisted fingers far from sure,
I grasped the precious fruit she bore,
When first I heard her cry.
